Symbols

There are some relevant symbols in the text you should pay attention to when analysing the story “A Shocking Accident” by Graham Greene.

The pig

The pig which kills Jerome’s father is probably the most important symbol in the story. On the one hand, the pig symbolises death. On the other hand, it symbolises the absurdity or triviality of death and of human existence overall.

Also, the pig is kept by a family in Naples in order to eat it when it becomes fat enough. It is therefore ironic that the pig which is intended to help keep a family alive ends up causing the death of someone else, an innocent passer-by.
