“Dad, Can I Come Home?” by Malorie Blackman begins by telling us that a father receives a phone call from his daughter, Eve. She is detached to another planet in some planetary war. She calls from Tdir-ah, and she mentions to her father that she has a limited time to speak, as the war is over and many people queue to use the phones to call Earth. Her father cannot see her face, as Eve states that the phone screen is not working.

Eve asks her father if he remembers Janice, Eve’s co-pilot. Apparently, in an attempt to save Eve’s life, Janice lost an arm, both her legs and her face has been disfigured. When Eve proposes her father that Janice would stay with them for good once they return...
