Characters

The main characters of the short story “Death Constant Beyond Love” by Gabriel García Márquez are Senator Onésimo Sánchez, Nelson Farina, and Laura Farina. The characters meet in the village of Rosal del Virrey, where the Senator arrives to deliver one of his campaign speeches. This is the moment when the narrative introduces Nelson Farina, an escaped French convict who needs the Senator’s help to escape the law. His daughter, Laura Farina, is treated as an object by both men, who only see her as the embodiment of their desires. This is why we do not know much about Laura Farina, except what the Senator and her father think of her.
