The main intention behind Joe Biden’s 2020 victory speech is to persuade the American people to be united, instead of working against each other.

Biden’s intention is important considering the circumstances. His win at the 2020 elections came at the end of a campaign which divided the country on several issues, such as climate change, economy, health care, and the adequate response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The country was then further divided by Trump’s refusal to accept the election results. When he addresses Trump’s supporters, Biden stresses the importance of listening and seeing each other again (ll. 42-43), instead of treating each other as enemies with no common ground (l. 44).
