Historical background

The novel Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind reflects the historical reality of the time when the action takes place. From 1643 until his death in 1715, "the Sun King" Louis XIV reigned in France. Under him, science and art flourished and were widely appreciated. Louis XIV was a patron of artists. His penchant for wealth is particularly evident in the construction of the magnificent Palace of Versailles, which was also intended to be a sign of his power. As sole ruler, he consolidated the monarchy and led France to great international renown.
