The short story starts with Elliot Chatwin, who is waiting for his taxi to pick him up from the hotel where he has been attending a pharmaceutical industry conference. While he is waiting, he reflects on his past and on the previous night. He thinks about his three loves, Sally, Michiko, and Lucy. Sally was his mistress while Michiko was his wife, and they both wanted to separate from him. Lucy Venables was his childhood love, from when he was 11 years old.
