The events described in the short story “The Demon Lover” by Elizabeth Bowen take place in London in 1941, during World War II. The references to the bombings that force people to move to the countryside further reveal that the events take place during “the Blitz”, a German bombing campaign against the UK. 

The isolated landscape of London is described through Mrs. Drover’s eyes. As she arrives at her shut-down home to collect a few things, she acknowledges the outlandish aspect of her street:
