Close to the novel

The 2014 film adaptation of John Green’s novel The Fault in Our Stars was successful and highly praised. It grossed $300 million worldwide. The director of the film was Josh Boone and the screenplay was written by Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber. Hazel is played in the film by Shailene Woodley and Gus by Ansel Elgort. The film adaptation remains very close to the book. The chronology and most of the scenes and characters have been largely kept. Many of the dialogues and texts have even been taken directly from the novel . Naturally, however, changes have been made . A film has much less time to tell a story than a novel. Therefore, it is often necessary to cut things from a book for a film and sometimes to change the chronology slightly in order to achieve a dramatization that is more effective for the film.

In addition, it must be mentioned that the film naturally also has other means to tell a story. For example, the film sometimes uses flash-forwards or fade-in scenes, such as at the beginning of the film, to visually support what Hazel is reporting. Music is used to highlight emotions.


Some of the dialogue from the novel has been shortened for the film. Scenes have been combined, and in some cases the order of the scenes has been changed. For example, the conversation between Augustus and Hazel about his death is shorter in the film than in the novel. Hazel's two encounters with Van Houten at the end have been merged into one, and the discussion with Hazel's parents about the parents' future was placed before Augustus' pre-funeral in the film. In the book, this comes after Augustus' death.

The supporting characters that were not essential to tell the main story between Hazel and Augustus have been cut out in the film. Hazel's school friend Kaitlyn, for example, does not appear in the film and the scenes with Lida from the support group have also been completely cut. In addition, the whole story with Augustus' ex-girlfriend Caroline is left out. Augustus' and Hazel's friend Isaac does appear in the film, but...
