The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas is narrated in the first person by the main character, Starr Carter. The entire novel is written in the present tense, which gives the impression that we learn about the unfolding events in the order that Starr experiences them. It also means that Starr does not reveal any advance knowledge about the way the story turns out, knowing just as little as the reader about future events - such as the outcome of the case against One-Fifteen.
