Shakespeare’s education and family life

William Shakespeare (1564-1616) is considered one of the greatest poets and playwrights that ever lived. He is often referred to as “the Bard. Despite his fame, however, a detailed biography is difficult to make. 

We know that Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon in the mid-western part of England. He was the son of John Shakespeare, who was a well-respected glove maker, and Mary Arden, who was the daughter of a fairly wealthy landowner. 

We do not know anything about Shakespeare’s education, but it is typically assumed that he attended the local grammar school. This would have given him a thorough knowledge of grammar and classical literature - elements which can be found in his works. There is no record of a university education.
